Alsace is one of France's most alluring regions. Sheltering in the slopes of the Vosges by the Rhine are fairy-tale villages with cobbled, twisting alleyways, half-timbered houses with storks nesting on their roofs, all surrounded by the vineyards of Alsace. Rising to the west are the refreshing woods, streams and lakes of the Vosges hills with their sturdy mountain villages.
HALF-TIMBERD HOUSES, DELIGHTFUL VINEYARD VILLAGES
Walk Alsace is the Australian agent for a select group of traditional hotels spread through hills and vineyard villages offering a variety of circular itineraries, from the vineyards and the mountains and back. Subject to the availability of hotels, the tour can be commenced on any day. Itineraries differ according to the hotel from which the tour starts with each itinerary offering a variety of terrain. The walking notes are individually adjusted to match your particular circuit.
PAUSE FOR WINETASTING
All walks follow a pattern. Typically, you start near the enchanting town of Colmar, amidst the vineyards, from one of three neighbouring wine-producing villages - Keintzheim, Kaysersberg or Niedermorschwihr. Here, the people are dedicated to the production of wine - delicious dry Rieslings, spicy Gewurztraminers, aromatic Pinots. Viticulturalists offer tastings at almost every corner. From here, you set off through the vineyards and into the hills beyond.
THE SECRET LAKES OF THE VOSGES HILLS
You walk through rolling woodland to Lapoutroie or follow the pilgrim route to the hill-top spa village of Trois Epis. Labaroche and Orbey are dairying villages nestled between the hills. Deeper into the Vosges on the hillier walks between Orbey, Lapoutroie and Le Bonhomme you will have the opportunity to walk on the Chemin des Deux Lacs to Lac Blanc and Lac Noir and will discover many reminders of the first World War - trenches, barbed wire barricades and solemn graveyards.
The hotels are chosen for hospitality, friendship and high quality service. Their restaurants offer Alsatian specialities - such as choucroute a l'ancienne, tarte a l'oignon and munster cheese.
Visit this unique border area where the village names reflect the proximity of Germany and the people are passionately French. Experience warm Alsatian hospitality: villages with fortified walls, 12th Century buildings and imposing castles; picturesque vineyards and welcoming wine cellars; lush pastures and wildflowers; and the verdant Vosges hills with Walk Alsace. |
